Red Twig Dogwood
A landscape shrub that becomes more interesting when winter arrives
Red Twig Dogwood is a deciduous shrub known for the brilliant red stems revealed after its leaves drop. During spring and summer, green foliage gives it the appearance of a full, natural shrub. As the landscape transitions into winter, the foliage disappears and the colorful branches become the feature.
At Beebe Landscape Design, we like Red Twig Dogwood because it adds interest during a season when many landscapes lose much of their color. Used in the right setting, those red stems can stand out against evergreens, stone, dormant grasses, bare woods, and especially snow.
Why Choose Red Twig Dogwood?
Bright red stems provide distinctive late-fall and winter color
Green spring and summer foliage creates a full, natural appearance during the growing season
Multi-stem growth adds texture and movement to larger planting areas
Works well in groups where multiple plants create a stronger winter display
Useful in naturalized areas as well as more designed residential landscapes
Strong contrast with evergreens and ornamental grasses helps keep winter landscapes visually interesting
Red Twig Dogwood Through the Seasons
Red Twig Dogwood is a good example of why we think about a landscape beyond its spring and summer appearance.
Spring brings fresh foliage against the already colorful stems as the plant returns to active growth.
Summer creates a fuller green shrub that can blend naturally with surrounding plantings and provide mass within a larger landscape bed.
Fall begins the transition as the foliage changes and eventually drops.
Winter is the payoff. Once the leaves are gone, the red stems are fully exposed. Against dormant vegetation, evergreen foliage, stone, or occasional Virginia snow, their color becomes much more noticeable.
The result is a shrub whose role changes with the seasons rather than providing the same appearance throughout the year.
Red Twig Dogwood in Central Virginia Landscapes
Red Twig Dogwood can work particularly well on properties throughout Charlottesville, Albemarle County, Greene County, and surrounding Central Virginia communities where there is room for a more natural, multi-stem shrub.
It can also be a useful option for portions of a property that hold more moisture than a typical foundation bed, making it especially interesting around ponds, drainage areas, rain gardens, and other appropriately sited areas.
Because Red Twig Dogwood can develop into a substantial shrub, mature size matters. We prefer giving it enough room to develop naturally rather than placing it somewhere that will require constant pruning simply to keep it contained.
Designing With Red Twig Dogwood
We especially like Red Twig Dogwood where its winter stems have something to contrast against.
Placed in front of dark evergreens, the red branches become considerably more noticeable once the leaves fall. Near ornamental grasses, stone, or a natural woodland edge, the stems introduce color without making the landscape feel overly formal.
Grouping several plants can create an even stronger effect, particularly on larger properties or around naturalized areas and water features.
Maintenance also plays a role in the appearance. Younger stems typically provide the strongest color, so thoughtful pruning can encourage fresh growth and help maintain the winter display as the planting matures.
Red Twig Dogwood doesn't need to look spectacular every month of the year to earn its place in a landscape. Its value is that when much of the landscape becomes quieter, this plant starts doing some of its best work.
