Hydrangea
Big seasonal color with a softer landscape presence
Hydrangeas are one of the most recognizable flowering shrubs in Central Virginia, known for large blooms that can bring color and texture to the landscape for months at a time. Depending on the variety, flowers can range from crisp white and soft green to pink, blue and purple, with different sizes and growth habits giving us plenty of flexibility in a landscape design.
At Beebe Landscape Design, we use hydrangeas when a property needs substantial flowering color without the rigid appearance of a tightly shaped evergreen. Their large flowers and broad foliage create a softer look that works especially well around homes, patios, walkways and layered planting beds.
Why Choose Hydrangeas?
Large, showy flowers create significant seasonal impact
Long flowering periods provide color well beyond a short spring bloom
Wide range of varieties and sizes allows us to select plants appropriate for different spaces
Multiple flower colors and forms provide flexibility within the overall landscape palette
Full, substantial growth can quickly become an important part of a planting bed
Pairs beautifully with evergreens that provide structure when hydrangeas are dormant
Hydrangeas in Central Virginia Landscapes
Hydrangeas are a natural fit for many properties throughout Charlottesville, Albemarle County, Greene County, and surrounding Central Virginia communities, but choosing the right hydrangea matters.
Some varieties perform well with considerable sun, while others benefit from protection during the hottest part of the day. Mature size can also vary considerably. A hydrangea selected for an open landscape bed may be completely wrong beneath a window or beside a narrow walkway.
Flower color isn't always as simple as choosing blue, pink or white either. Certain hydrangeas can change color depending on the variety and soil chemistry, while others maintain their characteristic flower color regardless of soil conditions.
That's why we look beyond the bloom shown on the nursery tag and consider how the plant will actually perform and mature within the property.
Designing With Hydrangeas
Hydrangeas can play several different roles in a landscape.
A grouping of hydrangeas can create a large sweep of summer color along a foundation or property edge. A single larger specimen can anchor a planting bed. More compact varieties can introduce flowers around patios and walkways without overwhelming the space.
We especially like pairing hydrangeas with evergreen shrubs such as boxwoods and hollies. The evergreens provide consistent structure and darker foliage, while the hydrangeas bring a completely different texture and seasonal display.
Ornamental grasses, small flowering shrubs, perennials and ornamental trees can add additional layers around them, creating a landscape where the hydrangea is part of the composition rather than simply a row of flowering shrubs.
And when winter arrives, the landscape still needs to work. Hydrangeas are deciduous, so surrounding them with thoughtfully placed evergreen structure helps the property maintain its shape even after the flowers and foliage are gone.
